Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Starts March 3rd, 2012 in Puerto Rico

by Killeen Gonzalez [March 2, 2012]

Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Starts March 3rd, 2012 in Puerto RicoInternational surfing fans will have their hands full this weekend. Not only are the Association of Surfing Professionals' (ASP) Quiksilver and Roxy Pro in Australia still ongoing but the 2012 Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit is scheduled to launch. The problem is the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will be taking place over 9,000 miles away in Puerto Rico. Therefore, it looks like fans will have no other choice but to keep one eye towards the South Pacific and the other towards the North Atlantic. Here's a rundown on the latest:

About the Event

The Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will take place at Domes Beach in Rincon on March 3rd and 4th, 2012. It is an annual Association Professionals of Surfing Puerto Rico (APSPR) sanctioned event that has been taking place for a decade now. There are usually three events in the series. Two contests typically occur at Middles and one takes place at Domes. Surfers will be competing to earn points at each Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit event. Those points are then totaled at the end of the surfing season to determine the overall APSPR Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Champion. A $25,000 prize purse is up for grabs for the men and the ladies will be vying for $12,000 in prize money.

About the Surfers

Some of the competitors expected to compete in the March 3rd event include Kekoa Bacalso, Amy Nicholl, Brian Toth and Liselie Gonzales. Bacalso, a 26 year old Hawaiian, was the winner of the 2010/2011 Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit's final Men's match-up at Middles. 21 year old Floridian Amy Nicholl won the circuit's Women's finals in Middles and closed out the 2010/2011 APSPR season with a 3rd place ranking. Both Brian Toth and Liselie Gonzales finished the 2010/2011 APSPR season with an overall first place ranking. Toth has held the APSPR Championship Title before and is considered a favorite to win again. He does face some robust competition though, so his path to victory is apt to be a hard fought one.

Where to Watch

Surf fans that are unable to visit Rincon, Puerto Rico, in person for the event will have the option of watching the action via a live web stream through the APSPR website. Those that miss the live stream will also have the option of watching videos of each heat online.
