Bowl-A-Rama 2012 in Sydney Australia

by Keith Hamm [March 12, 2012]

Bowl-A-Rama 2012 in Sydney AustraliaThe pro bowl-riding season is barely underway and already Pedro Barros is nearly $30,000 richer after winning three contests in a row, capping his hat trick this weekend at the Vans Bondi Bowl-A-Rama in Australia. His Bondi win also marks his third consecutive at the long-running event, which annually draws the world's best concrete specialists to the legendary beachfront bowl.

In the final, Barros, who hails from Florianopolis in southern Brazil, took control with overhead 540 variations and dialed alley-oop frontside 50-50 grinds through the pool's tight deep-end corner. Former Vans rider Bucky Lasek and Denmark's Rune Glifberg placed second and third, respectively.

In the masters division, 47-year-old Steve Caballero claimed his fifth straight Bondi victory, celebrating the win in honor of the 20th anniversary of his Vans Half Cab, skateboarding's first and longest-running pro signature shoe.

Barros' streak started two weeks back at the Wellington Bowl-A-Rama in New Zealand. The following weekend, he won the Pro Beach Bowl contest at the Australian Open of Surfing. By the time he rolled his momentum into Bondi, the contest was his to lose.

The next big event on the concrete calendar is the Pro-tec Pool Party, held at the Vans Combi Pool at The Block in Orange, Calif. Coming into that event in 2009 as a virtual unknown, Barros, who was 14 at the time, landed in fourth place. He scored another fourth in 2010. Last year he won it. Barros will attempt to defend his Pool Party title on May 12.
