Canada’s BMX Team Aims for Second Olympic Spot

by Press Release [April 13, 2012]

Canada’s BMX Team Aims for Second Olympic Spot Canadian BMX racer Tory Nyhaug is leading the Canadian entry for the second round of the UCI Supercross World Cup, in Randaberg, Norway. The event is critical for the Canadian team, who are aiming to move from ninth to eighth in the nations standing.

By doing so, and holding that position through the end of the qualification period in late May, Canada would secure a second berth for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

So far, Nyhaug has been responsible for a bulk of Canada’s 1570 points, having earned 1174. Jim Brown and Connor McCormack have 199 and 197 points respectively, and Brown is out with an injury.

Germany, presently ranked eighth, has 1601 points.

Nyhaug’s fifth place performance in Chula Vista was good for 110 points, moved the Canadian team extremely close to the German team. A similar result in Randaberg would see Canada move into the top eight nations in the BMX World Cup ranking.

Meanwhile, Germany is being led by Luis Brethauer, who finished 40th in Chula Vista.

The Canadian team in Randaberg will include Nyhaug, McCormack as well as Mischa Partridge and Derek Sipkoi.

The Randaberg course is new to the World Cup, but was the site of the 2010 World Championships. Located indoors, riders won’t have to contend with wet weather or windy conditions that can distract from the racing.
